I’m Eric Rauhanen with Silver Fox Outfitters a full
time outfitter here in Alberta. I run a series of hunts for my clients
that cover several species. We start the year off with a spring bear
hunt in the High Level area in NW Alberta. Here we maintain two small
camps, this lets us cut down on travel time to and from the bait sites.
We hunt a two tag area where almost everyone gets a bear and we average
about a 150% opportunity success rate. It’s a real fun hunt.
After a summer break we start our fall of with our
early season bowhunts in the western units. We then start our Elk rut
hunt in the Edson area. This is no doubt our most difficult hunt.
Clients book because they want a reasonable price, fair chase hunt with
a realistic chance of tagging a bull. If you want a guaranteed chance at
a 375+ B&C bull book a day at a game ranch, I can refer you to a few if
that’s your idea of elk hunting.
From the elk hunts we split into two camps one is in a bowhunting area where we first hunt rutting elk and then move to moose
rut hunting. Our success on this hunt fluctuates a fair bit, real
bowhunters can understand the reasons. The 2nd camp is our moose rut
rifle camp. We hunt several areas at this time all the way from mountain
zones with snow covered peaks nearby to the gentle rolling foothills. We
do very well on this hunt, one year had us tag four bulls in four days by
four
clients.
After a two week break, we move one of our camps to a late
season (a rifle hunting in Nov only area) moose & elk tent camp hunt.
The guys that can invest enough time do very good on this hunt. On this
post rut hunt, we travel the extensive network of oil/logging roads as
well as the cutlines/powerlines looking for bulls and sign left in the
snow. This is a really enjoyable experience and a lot different then the
early season hunts.
At the same time in a different area we have a small
whitetail hunt going on. The hunters are put up in a lodge or motels and
eat in a restaurant. We normally hunt the entire day, with the most
common method being stand hunting scraplines/game trails and watching
travel corridors on cutlines & powerlines. The last few winters have
been extremely mild and Alberta has never had as many deer as does now.
In 2007 all our clients tagged a buck or had chances.
This is a brief overview of the hunts we run. I have
two brochures and I’ll mail you one if you send me your postal address.
If you have any questions at all about the great hunts we run or you’d
like me to e-mail you a reference list please feel free to e-mail or
call, it’s a toll free number.
